How to prevent common health concerns for elderly women

​Women in today’s world end up managing homes as well as working to earn. However, during this busy lifestyle, sometimes they forget to take care of themselves.Also, most of the women till they reach the 40s don’t bother much about their health and it is only after that when they start worrying about aging issues. However, it is much better if they can prevent these concerns with a little bit of care in advance.

Here are some tips on what they can do:

1. Menopause: If you are above 55 years of age,and have a lack of sleep, constant mood swings, or hot flashes, you may need to consider hormone therapy. It is a safe and also quite effective. However, if you have had a hysterectomy, you are in early menopause or having significantly high symptoms, please check with your physician on this therapy.

2. Osteoporosis: Menopause is the time when most women have the highest risk of osteoporosis. So, if you are above the age of 40, avoid taking alcohol and cigarettes. Get enough vitamin D3 and do regular weight-bearing workouts. You should be taking at least 1,000 to 1200 mg of calcium and 1000 IU to 2000 IU of vitamin D3 if you are above 50 years of age. Also, get yourself checked for bone-mineral density post-menopause. In case you have had a bone injury or fracture, you can simply get a baseline bone density check.

3. Avoiding Cancer: Some simple ways to avoid breast cancer, cervical cancer, or colon cancer are to avoid smoking, excessive alcohol use, manage weight withregular exercising, eat a good diet and get enough sunshine for vitamin D3. If you have a family history of breast cancer, it is better for you to also get a cancer risk assessment more frequently you reach the age of 50. To check for cervical cancer, you can get a Pap smear and HPV testing by the time you are 30. For colon cancer, you can start screening by the age of 45 and get a colonoscopy done every 10 years. Remember, the sooner you find any symptoms, the better it is to get treated.
